The new year is here and we have a full calendar of new movies to look forward to.
We've collected the year's most anticipated, mouth-watering releases to share with you here!
Mickey 17 (dir. Bong Joon-ho)
For many, Bong Joon-ho became a household name thanks to the gargantuan success of 2019's Parasite, which saw him win the Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay.
Its been over half-a-decade since Bong released Parasite, leaving audiences around the world salivating for his next work: Mickey 17.
Described as a science fiction black comedy, Mickey 17 will tell the story of Micky Barnes, a disposable employee who is sent to colonize the ice world Niflheim and is repeatedly cloned when he dies. After unintentionally surviving a perilous expedition, Mickey 17 goes head to head with a new multiple, Mickey 18.
Batman-star Robert Pattinson takes on the lead role of Mickey while Naomi Ackie, Mark Ruffalo, Toni Collette, and Steven Yeun fill out the cast.
The film is based on Edward Ashton's novel Mickey7.
Mickey 17 is currently set to release on Mar. 7, 2025.
Superman (dir. James Gunn)
Its been over a decade since audiences have been treated to a solo film about the Man of Steel.
That long wait will pay off this summer when James Gunn's Superman releases in theaters.
DC Studios described Superman as "a singular blend of epic action, humor and heart, delivering a Superman who's driven by compassion and an inherent belief in the goodness of mankind."
The film's first trailer set the internet ablaze, garnering a record 250 million views in its first 24 hours of release. Superman could well be the movie of the summer blockbuster season.
The film features David Corenswet as the iconic Man of Steel, Rachel Brosnahan as his love interest, Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as the evil supervillain Lex Luthor.
Superman flies into theatres on Jul. 11, 2025.
Wake Up Dead Man (dir. Rian Johnson)
Director Rian Johnson struck gold in 2019, releasing the smash-hit whodunnit thriller Knives Out.
The film was so successful critically and commercially that streaming giant Netflix purchased the rights to two sequels from Johnson in a deal reportedly worth north of $400 million.
The first of those sequels, Glass Onion, released in fall 2022. The second, Wake Up Dead Man, is set to be released in the back half of 2025.
Wake Up Dead Man sees the master detective Benoit Blanc, played marvelously by Daniel Craig, unravel an all new mystery.
Plot details are light at this time, but we do know that the film will feature an all-star cast rounded out by Josh O'Connor, Glenn Close, Josh Brolin, Mila Kunis, Jeremy Renner, Kerry Washington, Cailee Spaeny, and Thomas Haden Church.
Audiences can unravel the mystery of Wake Up Dead Man on Netflix and in theaters in late 2025.
Frankenstein (dir. Guillermo del Toro)
No living filmmaker creates more human, relatable, or lovable monsters than Guillermo del Toro.
Its a feat his accomplished time and time again, from The Shape of Water to Pan's Labyrinth to Pinocchio.
Del Toro's love for monsters make his next project, an adaptation of Mary Shelley's Gothic horror novel Frankenstein, particularly exciting.
The director has been working on project since 2007, with production quickening after Netflix signed del Toro to a multi-year deal in 2023.
The film is set to feature Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein while Saltburn and Euphoria star Jacob Elordi plays Frankenstein's monster. Mia Goth and Christoph Waltz also join the cast.
Frankenstein is set to be released by Netflix in the back half of 2025.
Paddington in Peru (dir. Douglas Wilson)
The Paddington films are second only to The Lord of the Rings in terms of outstanding critical reception for a trilogy. If you haven't seen them, no, I'm not joking and yes, I'm being deadly serious.
Thanks to their irresistible charm, cast of lovable characters, quirky sense of humor, and heartwarming atmosphere, the Paddington films have endeared themselves as the pinnacle of family entertainment for audiences across the globe. Paddington 2 in particular is revered by many as one of the best films of its era.
The third film in the franchise, Paddington in Peru, sees the lovable bear travel to the eponymous South American country in search of his beloved Aunt Lucy. However, hijinks ensue and Paddington must navigate the Amazon rainforest with a host of new friends.
Ben Whishaw returns as the voice of Paddington. Star actors Olivia Colman, Antonio Banderas, and Hayley Atwell join the cast in supporting roles.
Paddington in Peru has already released for audiences in the United Kingdom, where it has received general critical acclaim, though some claim it is the weakest of the trilogy.
The film releases for American audiences on Feb. 5, 2025.
Avatar: Fire and Ash (dir. James Cameron)
If there's any movie you can bet on being a surefire box office hit in 2025, its Avatar: Fire and Ash. The previous two films in the franchise rank as the first and third highest grossing movies of all time, each earning well over $2 billion at the global box office.
Its also safe to bet on Fire and Ash having some of the most jaw-dropping and groundbreaking visual effects in the industry, with director James Cameron having developed new technology specifically to bring his vision of Pandora to life.
Fire and Ash has been in development for years now, having begun principal photography in 2017 alongside Avatar: The Way of Water and reportedly reaching 95% completion by September 2020. The film's release has been subject to a total of 9 delays.
The story of the Na'vi's fight against interstellar colonialism and human-driven ecological devastation is one that has resonated deeply with audiences since the franchise began in 2009. Fire and Ash is set to build on the mythos of the first two films, seeing Jake Sully and his children encounter the Ash People, a Na'vi tribe that are more fiery and violent than ones we've met before.
The film will see the return of many Avatar regulars including Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, and Kate Winslet.
David Thewlis and Oona Chaplin join the cast as new characters.
Avatar: Fire and Ash will be one of the year's penultimate releases, coming to theaters on Dec. 19, 2025.
Marty Supreme (dir. Josh Safdie)
Directors Josh and Benny Safdie have grown quite the name for themselves in recent years, achieving widespread critical acclaim for their last two films, Good Time and Uncut Gems.
In 2025, the directing duo is set to split up, with each brother directing his own sports drama film.
The first of these films is Josh Safdie's Marty Supreme, a ping-pong themed period piece set in the 1950s that is based loosely on the life of Marty Reisman.
Starboy Timothee Chalamet has been tapped to play the lead, with Gwyneth Paltrow and music icon Tyler, the Creator set to appear in supporting roles.
Marty Supreme is reportedly the most expensive film produced by A24 with a budget of $70 million (2024's Civil War previously held this record with a budget of $50 million).
Not much else is known about the film at this time except for its release date: Dec. 25, 2025.
The Smashing Machine (dir. Benny Safdie)
Benny Safdie's film, The Smashing Machine, swaps out ping-pong for combat sports.
The film is based on the life and career of former wrestler and mixed martial artist Mark Kerr.
Dramas based on ring-based combat sports have a long history of success in the industry, from Rocky to Raging Bull to, most recently, The Iron Claw. It'll be interesting to see how The Smashing Machine compares to other films in this subgenre.
Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt appear as the film's leads.
The Safdies have a history of giving new life to the careers of their lead actors. Good Time showed off a new side of Robert Pattinson, allowing many to view him as more than just Edward from Twilight. Director Matt Reeves said he decided to cast Pattinson as his Batman specifically because of his performance in the film.
In the same vein, Uncut Gems features what many consider to be a career best performance for Adam Sandler, allowing him to supersede the trappings of the low-brow comedies he was known for appearing in.
Perhaps The Smashing Machine will give The Rock a similar platform to redefine his career.
Johnson has suggested as much in preview events, saying the film was "an opportunity to challenge [himself] in ways [he] hadn't been challenged before."
The film does not have an exact release date, but is expected to come to theaters in the back half of 2025.
The Battle of Baktan Cross (dir. Paul Thomas Anderson)
There's only five words that matter here: "directed by Paul Thomas Anderson."
Anderson is among the most well revered and prolific directors in modern Hollywood, having produced a handful of landmark films, from There Will Be Blood to Phantom Thread to Punch-Drunk Love. Most recently, he released the teen romance film Licorice Pizza in 2021.
Details surrounding his newest film, The Battle of Baktan Cross, are few and far between.
It is described as a crime drama thriller based on the novel Vineland, and is set to feature Leonardo DiCaprio in the leading role. Baktan Cross will mark the first collaboration between Anderson and DiCaprio.
Regina Hall, Sean Penn, and Benicio del Toro are set to appear in supporting roles.
The film is set to be Anderson's first film to be released in IMAX, and reportedly has a budget north of $100 million.
The Battle of Baktan Cross is set to be released on Aug. 8, 2025.
Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning (dir. Christopher McQuarrie)
The end of an era is truly upon us. Mission: Impossible has been a staple Hollywood franchise for almost three decades since the first film released in 1996.
The series' primary draw has always been the sheer spectacle of Tom Cruise's death-defying stunts, and The Final Reckoning looks to take those stunts to the next level with trailers showing Cruise dangling off biplanes and infiltrating a submarine.
However, the newest installment in the franchise promises to have the heart to match its action chops. The Final Reckoning has been billed as the final film in the series and will likely see audiences bid farewell to Ethan Hunt (for now at least).
The Final Reckoning serves as a direct sequel to Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning, and will see Impossible Missions Force agent Ethan Hunt and his crew take on The Entity, a rogue artificial intelligence aiming to achieve global dominance.
Series regulars Tom Cruise, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Hayley Atwell, Vanessa Kirby, and Pom Klementieff make their return in The Final Reckoning. Nick Offerman and Ted Lasso's Hannah Waddingham are new additions to the cast.
Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning sneaks into theaters on May 23, 2025.
Bugonia (dir. Yorgos Lanthimos)
Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos has cemented himself as one of the most creative, unique and absurdist talents working in the industry (in a good way of course!)
His 2023 film Poor Things achieved widespread critical acclaim, taking home four Oscars at the 96th Academy Awards. His body of work also includes cult favorites The Lobster, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, The Favourite, and most recently, Kinds of Kindness.
Lanthimos's newest project, Bugonia, marks a turn for the director as he dips his toe into the science fiction genre for the first time.
Based on the South Korean movie Save the Green Planet!, Bugonia tells the story of two young conspiracy theorists who kidnap the CEO of a major company, convinced that she is an alien who will destroy planet Earth.
Emma Stone stars, marking her fourth collaboration on a feature film with Lanthimos. Jesse Plemons and Alicia Silverstone are also confirmed to appear.
Bugonia is set to release in theaters on Nov. 7, 2025.
Marvel Cinematic Universe
2025 feels like a make or break year for Kevin Feige and the rest of the Marvel Studios team.
Marvel reached its cultural apex in 2018 and 2019 with a pair of smash-hit Avengers films, but has struggled to find its footing in the new decade outside of a few hits.
The MCU has three films releasing in the new year. Will any of them be able to revitalize Marvel as pop culture's dominant cinematic juggernaut?
The first of these films is Captain America: Brave New World.
Billed as a political espionage thriller, Brave New World sees Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson replace Chris Evans's Steve Rogers as Captain America. Are audiences willing to buy into a Captain America film without the series' iconic lead?
Captain America: Brave New World will see Sam Wilson find himself in the middle of an international incident following the election of Harrison Ford's Thaddeus Ross / Red Hulk as U.S. President.
The film is directed by Julius Onah, and will be released on Feb. 14, 2025.
The second Marvel film of the year is Thunderbolts*. Marvel's answer to DC's Suicide Squad, Thunderbolts* will see a collection of Marvel anti-heroes and supervillains team up to perform missions for the government.
The film will be helmed by Sebastian Stan's Bucky Barnes and Florence Pugh's Yelena Belova.
The biggest question here is if the lack of A-list comic book characters will harm audience interest in the film.
Directed by Jake Schreier, Thunderbolts* is set to release on May 2, 2025.
If I had to bet on it, I'd go all in on Fantastic Four: First Steps being the most successful Marvel film of the year.
The Fantastic Four have had their fair share of silver screen adaptations, but this newest attempt promises to be different from the rest.
Producers say the movie will be set in a 1960s-inspired retro-futuristic Earth. Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach will appear as Mister Fantastic, Invisible Woman, The Human Torch, and The Thing.
With the departure of Iron Man and Captain America, Marvel has been in dire need of new tentpole heroes. I expect Fantastic Four to provide just that.
Audiences can find Fantastic Four: First Steps in theaters on Jul. 25, 2025.
Zootopia 2 (dir. Jared Bush and Bryon Howard)
Zootopia was a smash it for Walt Disney Studios in 2016, raking in over $1 billion at the global box office.
The original's financial success made a sequel to the animated buddy cop comedy inevitable and now, 9 years later, its making its way to theaters curtesy of directors Jared Bush and Byron Howard.
Bush and Howard have had a hand in nearly every animated Disney project in the past ten years, meaning the sequel is in steady, well-experienced hands.
Ginnifer Goodwin returns in Zootopia 2 as Judy Hopps, an optimistic rabbit who becomes the first of her kind on the Zootopia Police Department (ZPD), while Jason Bateman returns as Nick Wilde, a sly red fox and con artist who later joins the ZPD.
Oscar-winner Ke Huy Quan and Fortune Feimster bring some new blood to the franchise, playing the antagonistic snake Gary and beaver Nibbles respectively.
Zootopia 2 is sure to strike a chord with younger audiences and families alike, and makes its way to theaters on Nov. 26, 2025.
28 Years Later (dir. Danny Boyle)
28 Years Later is the third film in the post-apocalyptic horror 28 Days Later series, following 28 Days Later (2002) and 28 Weeks Later (2007).
Series creators Danny Boyle and Alex Garland return to direct and write the film, which was shot entirely on iPhones.
True to its title, the film picks up nearly three decades after the events of the original, exploring how a group of survivors has adapted since a virus wiped out most of human civilization.
Cillian Murphy appears in one of his first roles since his awards-winning turn as J. Robert Oppenheimer in Oppenheimer, reprising his role from the original film.
Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ralph Fiennes, and Jack O'Connell fill out the rest of the cast.
28 Years Later is set to hit theaters on Jun. 20, 2025.
F1 (dir. Joseph Kosinski)
Formula One is one of the fastest growing sports in America, with races being held in Miami, Austin, and Las Vegas in the 2024 season.
Director Joseph Kosinski seeks to replicate the exhilarating speeds and life-or-death stakes of the sport in the theater with his new action drama, F1.
Kosinski captured the hearts of audiences and lit the box office ablaze in 2022 with his popular action film Top Gun: Maverick.
The experience Kosinski gained with filming fast-moving vehicles on that project has left many excited for how he will imagine Formula One on the silver screen.
F1 stars Brad Pitt as Sonny Hayes, a Formula One veteran who comes out of retirement to mentor rookie prodigy Joshua Pearce, played by Damson Idris, for the Apex Grand Prix team.
The film also features Javier Bardem, Kerry Condon, and over a dozen real life Formula One drivers, including former champions Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen.
F1 races into theaters on Jun. 27, 2025.
M3GAN 2.0 (dir. Gerard Johnstone)
M3GAN was a surprise horror hit in 2022, netting studio Blumhouse a $181 million box office return against a $12 million budget.
Eager to reignite that success, Blumhouse greenlit a sequel in November 2022.
Just over a year ago, director Gerard Johnstone and writer Akela Cooper announced they would collaborate to produce the sequel.
The film centers on the homicidal doll-like-robot M3GAN, who terrorizes those around her. Exact plot details for M3GAN 2.0 are under wraps.
Allison Williams and Violet McGraw reprise their roles from the first film, while Ivanna Sakhno, Timm Sharp, Aristotle Athari and Jermaine Clement make new additions to the ensemble.
M3GAN 2.0 is set to arrive in theaters on Jun. 27, 2025.
The Phoenician Scheme (dir. Wes Anderson)
Wes Anderson has one of the most eye-catching visual styles of any director working today.
His movies are known for their whimsical characters, pleasant color palettes, and exaggerated worlds.
The Phoenician Scheme is the latest in Anderson's filmography and his third release this decade after The French Dispatch and Asteroid City.
Like most of his work, The Phoenician Scheme features a mouth-watering ensemble including Benicio del Toro, Michael Cera, Bill Murray, Riz Ahmed, Tom Hanks, Scarlett Johansson, Benedict Cumberbatch, Bryan Cranston, and Willem Dafoe.
Little is known about the film other than that it will be an espionage comedy-drama thriller.
The Pheonician Scheme is set to come to theaters at some point in 2025.
After the Hunt (dir. Luca Guadagnino)
In 2025, the name Luca Guadagnino has become become synonymous with movie success.
The Italian-born director is responsible for a handful of Hollywood smash-hits, including last year's tennis drama Challengers, Call Me By Your Name, a remake of Suspiria, Bones and All, and, most recently, the Daniel Craig-led drama Queer.
Guadagnino's films are characterized by their eroticism, emotional complexity, and stunning visuals.
His track record makes his newest project After the Hunt one to keep your eye on in 2025.
Described as a thriller, the film follows a college professor who is forced to grapple with her mysterious past after one of her colleagues faces serious allegations.
Julia Roberts appears in After the Hunt's leading role, with Ayo Edebiri, Andrew Garfield, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Chloe Sevigny filling out the cast.
Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, who collaborated with Guadagnino to produce a critically acclaimed score for Challengers, return for After the Hunt.
The movie is set to release in 2025 at an unspecified date.
Sinners (dir. Ryan Coogler)
Over the past decade, director Ryan Coogler has cemented himself as a preeminent voice in the world of blockbuster entertainment.
After producing the heartbreaking drama Fruitvale Station, Coogler broke out on center stage with Creed, a boxing film set in the world of Rocky.
Coogler then set the world ablaze after he wrote and directed Black Panther and its sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the first of which is regarded as one of the greatest blockbuster films of all time.
His pension for high-octane thrills and resonant storytelling makes his next project, Sinners, one of the year's most exciting.
At the heart of Sinners is Michael B. Jordan, who portrays a pair of twin brothers: Elijah and Elias.
The official synopsis for the movie is as follows: "Trying to leave their troubled lives behind, twin brothers return to their hometown to start again, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back."
Set in the 1930s, the Sinners is rumored to feature vampires.
You'll be able to see Sinners soon as the film arrives in theaters on Apr. 18, 2025.
The Bride! (dir. Maggie Gyllenhaal)
Acclaimed actor Maggie Gyllenhaal is set to make her directing debut in 2025 with a musical monster flick, The Bride!
Gyllenhaal, who is perhaps best known for her role as Bruce Wayne's love interest Rachel in The Dark Knight, says her project draws inspiration from James Whale's 1935 film Bride of Frankenstein, which itself was adapted from Mary Shelley's 1818 novel Frankenstein.
Netflix was originally scheduled to produce the film, but reportedly abandoned it after the 2023 Hollywood strikes in favor of a separate Frankenstein film from Guillermo del Toro (mentioned earlier in this article).
In November 2023, Warner Bros. Pictures stepped in to produce instead.
The Bride! features Jessie Buckley as Frankenstein's bride while Christian Bale appears as Frankenstein's monster. Penelope Cruz, Peter Sarsgaard, Annette Bening, and Jake Gyllenhaal fill out the supporting cast.
The monster flick is scheduled to be released into theaters just in time for spooky season on Sep. 26.
A Minecraft Movie (dir. Jared Hess)
Minecraft has been an enduring pop culture icon since its release in 2011, uniting gamers of all ages and backgrounds. It is the best selling video to date, with over 300 million copies sold across all platforms.
To put this staggering number into context, the second-best selling game of all time, Grand Theft Auto V, has only 2/3 of this total, with only 205 million copies sold.
Producers hope that like 2023's Super Mario Bros. Movie, the popularity of Minecraft's IP carries the film to global box office success.
Like the aforementioned Mario movie, Minecraft features fan favorite actor Jack Black in a leading role. Game of Thrones and Aquaman alum Jason Momoa also appears.
Production company Warner Bros. describes the film as similar to Jumanji as a cast of four misfits find themselves mysteriously sucked into a portal that brings them to the bizarre, cubic wonderland of Minecraft.
Audience reactions to the film have been mostly negative since the first teaser trailer released with many levying criticism at the movie's "unsettling imagery" and uncanny CGI.
Will A Minecraft Movie find success with global audiences? We'll find out soon enough as the film digs its way into theaters on Apr. 4, 2025.
Highest 2 Lowest (dir. Spike Lee)
There's a lot to be excited for with Highest 2 Lowest.
For one thing, the film is being helmed by Spike Lee, one of Hollywood's living legends.
For another, the movie is based on High and Low, a 1963 film directed by Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa, regarded by many as one of the greatest and most influential artists of all time.
Lee received the script from writer Alan Fox during the COVID-19 Pandemic, which he reworked.
Denzel Washington is attached to appear in the film, marking his fifth collaboration with Lee. Actors Ilfenesh Hadera and Jeffrey Wright are set to be joined by artists Ice Spice and ASAP Rocky in the ensemble cast.
Highest 2 Lowest is set to be released into theaters in spring by A24 before being made available to stream on Apple TV+.
The Running Man (dir. Edgar Wright)
The Running Man is an upcoming dystopian action thriller produced and directed by Edgar Wright, the brilliant mind behind Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Scott Pilgrim, and Baby Driver.
Known for his quick, crisp editing, kinetic cinematography, and humorous style, Wright is one of the most exciting visionaries working today.
The Running Man is based on the 1982 Stephen King novel of the same name.
Wright's project is the second cinematic adaptation of The Running Man, with the first coming in 1987 courtesy of director Paul Michael Glaser and actor Arnold Schwarzenegger. That film received a mixed response from critics upon release, but has gone on to grow a cult following in the nearly 40 years since.
The film tells the fictional story of a game show called The Running Man, where people are chased by murderous Hunters across the world to win money.
Rising star Glen Powell appears in the film's leading role, marking his first collaboration with Wright. The Running Man is also set to feature Katy O'Brian, Daniel Ezra, Josh Brolin, and Lee Pace.
Wright revealed on Twitter that he would like to remake the film as early as 2017. Filming is set to conclude in March of this year.
With the talent it has both in front of and behind the camera, The Running Man looks to be one of 2025's can't-misses.
The film is set to be released theatrically by Paramount Pictures on Nov. 7.
Wicked: For Good (dir. Jon Chu)
Wicked exploded in popularity across theaters and the Internet last year, becoming the defining film of 2024 for many.
To the glee and delight of those fans, the wait for more Wicked won't be long as its sequel, Wicked: For Good, hits theaters on Nov. 21.
The film, which was shot concurrently with Wicked, adapts the second act of Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman's stage musical of the same name.
Director John M. Chu says that Wicked: For Good is not a standalone film but the second half of the original's story. The story sees principal characters Elphaba and Galinda put their friendship to the test as they embrace their new identities as the Wicked Witch of the West and Galinda the Good.
"It became impossible to wrestle the story of Wicked into a single film without doing significant damage to it," Chu said in an interview with Deadline. "We decided to give ourselves a bigger canvas and make not just one Wicked movie but two! With more space, we can tell the story of Wicked as it was meant to be told."
Schwartz confirmed that the film will feature two new original songs not present in the stage musical.
Wicked: For Good brings back the original's cast, including Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Galinda. Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Michelle Yeoh, and Jeff Goldblum also reappear.
If the first film's success is anything to go by, expect Wicked: For Good to make waves when it releases.
Ballerina (dir. Len Wiseman)
The mainline John Wick series ended with 2023's John Wick: Chapter 4, but the series' expansive world has left plenty of room for producers to explore spin-off stories. Ballerina is just that.
Set between the events of John Wick: Chapter 3 and John Wick: Chapter 4, Ballerina tells the story of Eve Macarro, a ballerina-assassin who seeks revenge for her father's death.
Ana de Armas, who first developed her action chops in the James Bond film No Time to Die, takes on the film's leading role.
The film also features Anjelica Huston, Gabriel Byrne, the Walking Dead's Norman Reedus, Ian McShane, and Keanu Reeves as John Wick.
Lance Reddick appears posthumously in his final on-screen appearance as Charon, the concierge of the Continental Hotel.
The film began development in 2017 as an independent action film, but was rewritten to be part of the John Wick franchise.
Ballerina promises to have the same nail-biting action choreography that led audiences to fall in love with the mainline franchise.
The film comes to theaters early in summer blockbuster season on Jun. 6.
A Big Bold Beautiful Journey (dir. Kogonada)
South Korean video essayist and director Kogonada is releasing his next film, A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, in May of this year.
Kogonada is known for his work on the feature films Columbus and After Yang as well as the series Star Wars: The Acolyte.
A Big Bold Beautiful Journey is described as a romantic fantasy film based on a screenplay from Seth Reiss.
The film stars Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell in its leading roles.
Sony Pictures acquired the rights to the film for $50 million and are set to release the project on May 9.
Jurassic World Rebirth (dir. Gareth Edwards)
Six films have been released in the Jurassic franchise to date, none of which have held a candle to Steven Spielberg's 1993's original film.
Jurassic World Rebirth marks a relaunch for the franchise, jettisoning the characters we have grown familiar with and introducing a whole new cast.
The film will be helmed by Scarlett Johansson, who plays the covert operations expert Zora Bennett, Mahershala Ali, who plays Zora's team leader Duncan Kincaid, and Jonathan Bailey, who plays paleontologist Dr. Henry Loomis.
Synopses for Rebirth say that the trio will be hired to collect genetic material from dinosaurs living in the wild to create a new drug that may be able to save human lives.
The project is directed by Gareth Edwards, who has been praised for his ability to stunningly capture big-budget spectacle on screen, making him a perfect match for the Jurassic franchise.
Edwards's work includes the 2014 remake of Godzilla, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and The Creator.
Time will tell if Rebirth's bold new direction is enough to reignite popular interest in the Jurassic franchise. The film releases on Jul. 2, 2025.
Eddington (dir. Ari Aster)
Known for his unique combination of unsettling horror, dark comedy, and graphic violence, director Ari Aster has a new film releasing this year: Eddington.
Aster struck gold in 2018 and 2019, releasing the hit horror films Hereditary and Midsommar, both of which went on achieve outstanding critical and commercial success.
His most recent work, Beau is Afraid, was less well received, bombing at the box office and receiving mixed reviews from critics.
Eddington is a chance for Aster to regather some momentum he may have lost with Beau.
The film marks a change from Aster's norm, seeing him drift away from horror and dip his toes into the Western genre for the first time.
Produced by A24, Eddington is described as a Western black comedy that follows the sheriff of a small New Mexico town with higher inspirations.
The film has an all-star cast including Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, Emma Stone, and Austin Butler.
Eddington was filmed in Albuquerque and is set to be released later this year.
Materialists (dir. Celine Song)
Who doesn't love a good romcom?
Celine Song achieved international acclaim in 2023 for her romantic drama film Past Lives, which was nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards.
Her next film, Materialists, is a romantic comedy that follows the story of a match-maker and her ex-boyfriend in New York City.
Materialists was shot between Apr. 29 and Jun. 6, 2024.
The film stars Dakota Johnson and Chris Evans in its leading roles. Pedro Pascal also appears.
Materialists is distributed by A24 and is set to be released later this year.
Predator: Badlands (dir. Dan Trachtenberg)
The Predator franchise earned new life in 2022 with the release of Prey, a survival action film about a Predator stalking an indigenous American tribe in 1719.
Prey was a big swing, taking the franchise to an bold new setting and location. That swing largely paid off as the film became the first in the franchise since the original to receive mostly positive reviews.
Thanks to the film's success, director Dan Trachtenberg has been given they keys to the franchise. Next up for him: Predator: Badlands.
Badlands does not seem to continue the story of Prey. Instead, it'll take another big swing: this time around, the Predator will be the protagonist.
An official synopsis states that "in the future, a Predator traverses on an alien wasteland, while two sisters discover their horrifying past."
Elle Fanning has been cast in Badlands.
The film has a reported budget of $100 million and is set to release on Nov. 7.
Tron: Ares (dir. Joachim Ronning)
Billed as the third film in the Tron series, Tron: Ares is a film 15 years in the making.
Development on Ares began in 2010 after the release of Tron: Legacy by franchise creator Steven Lisberger.
Producers say that Tron: Ares is less of a sequel and more of a reboot for the franchise, bringing in a cast of all-new characters for the audience to invest in.
Norwegian director Joachim Rønning was hired to helm the film. Rønning's last movie was 2017's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.
Predecessor Tron: Legacy is perhaps best remembered for its electronic, ethereal score by Daft Punk. While Daft Punk is not returning for Ares, Nine Inch Nails has been brought on to produce a score that will prove to be different, but perhaps just as memorable in its own right.
The film stars Jared Leto as Ares, a highly sophisticated program that is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission.
Evan Peters, Jodie Turner-Smith, Greta Lee, Cameron Monaghan and Jeff Bridges also appear.
Tron: Ares is slated for an Oct. 10 release date.
Better Man (dir. Michael Gracey)
Musical biopics have become a staple of the modern film industry, proving to be some of the box office's most surefire, lucrative hits.
They are also some of the most stale, often covering the same well-trodden path and cliches. An artist from humble beginnings rises to fame, where they become addicted to the life of glamor that comes with celebrityhood. How many times have you seen that story?
At first glance, Better Man appears to have the trappings of the archetypical musical biopic.
The film chronicles the life of Robbie Williams, a British pop star who never quite broke out here in America.
There's one catch however: Williams is not portrayed by an actor but by a CGI chimpanzee.
When asked why he chose to depict himself as a chimp instead of a human being, Williams said it was because he always felt "less evolved than other people."
This creative decision gives Better Man a unique identity and perhaps self-deprecating quality that differentiates it from other films of the same vein.
The film is critically praised, with the Rotten Tomatoes consensus saying that "Better Man makes a monkey out of the traditional musical biopic to thrilling effect."
Better Man releases to audiences on Jan. 10.
